Greetings

Tokyo Guidelines for the management of acute cholangitis and cholecystitis, the international clinical practice guidelines for acute cholangitis and cholecystitis, was reported in the Journal of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery issued in February, 2007.

In the process of creating the guidelines, it has been revealed that there is a lack of evidence for diagnosing cholangitis and cholecystitis. It is reported that even the well-known Charcot’s triad has 50 ? 60 % of diagnostic accuracy. For this reason, the international consensus meeting established the diagnostic criteria and severity assessment for acute cholangitis of the Tokyo Guidelines on the base of the Charcot’s triad.

With these backgrounds, this study aims at examining clinically the criteria and severity assessment for acute cholangitis in Japan and overseas, and creates new criteria.

This study has been conducted as the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Scientific Research of 2008 and 2009, and receives research supported from the Japanese Society for Abdominal Emergency Medicine, Japanese Society for Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery, Japan Biliary Association and Japan Society for Surgical Infection.

This study was registered in UMIN (University hospital Medical Information Network) as a prospective clinical research.

We are aiming to transmit our research achievements as leading-edge evidence to the world and to create new, international criteria.

We appreciate your continued guidance and support for this historic accomplishment.
